Spanish Wells

We’ve been in the Bahamas for almost three weeks now. Time goes by so quickly.

Since our arrival, the winds have been pretty strong. There’s been just a day here and there that’s been calm. Many days we couldn’t leave the boat to take the dinghy ashore because the waves were too high and strong. This coming week is going to be the same.... we always need to look for decent anchorage spots that will give us some protection from the wind.

Up to now, we’ve been bounced around so much it makes it very difficult to get a good night sleep. And when we  do get off the boat, it takes a while to stop swaying even on solid ground lol

A few nights ago when the winds were particularly strong, our snubber line broke off the anchor and we had to go out at 1 o’clock in the morning to fix it.  The  winds were howling, the rain just pelting down and here we were in our jammies  and life jackets on deck. It was like a horror movie....holding on for dear life 😱
When we first started our journey, we would head for a marina and tie up for the duration of the storm but that really eats up a budget.
Going to a marina is ok but quite expensive for what you get.

If you think about it a marina is a great deal...for the marina. You basically bring your own house; bed, kitchen, bathroom and living space but they still except you to pay for the amenities They don’t provide fresh bed linen, you have to drag that yourself to the laundromat and pay for the machines, scrub your own toilet bowl; and towels not included; wash your own dishes (and no mini bar). The two nice things about marinas are unlimited water ie you can take the longest showers and no rolley  polley so you get a good night sleep. Ah the luxury of a marina

We are presently in a town called Spanish Wells in the Eleuthera’s.  We are absolutely blown away by the amount of golf carts that are here. There are more golf carts than cars and they drive like Mario Andretti. The roads are very narrow and lacking sidewalks so make sure you jump out of the way if  2 carts are passing each other. Pedestrians do not have priority here. Actually we haven’t encountered any pedestrians except us......wonder why??
It seems that Spanish Wells is a gated community without the gates(it’s an island)
The island is full of expat Americans so much so that there aren’t very many Bahamians here.
This could be Florida or pre Castro Cuba.
Revolution?
Asides from the golf cart issues the town is very beautiful  with homes in pastel colors, flowers everywhere. Very nice!!
This morning we’ve journeyed 20 minutes away to an island called Meeks which has wild pigs that love to swim in the ocean. Many tourists come over to swim alongside them. You also have chickens, roosters, ducks and one seriously mean looking turkey.
Cheers
Mike and Pierrette

  1. We are loving the pictures and updates. It is such an adventure. Strong wind there and here! We had 3 trees come down in the yard but unlike you 2 we were able to sleep through it! Did you swim with the piggies yet?
