Windy days, sleepless nights
Here we are in Hatchet Bay waiting for another big blow.
We arrived on Tuesday to be settled in for the arrival of the storm this weekend. This is one of the best protected areas of the Bahamas. It’s a natural harbor with 360 degree protection. We’ve been watching the steady arrivals of sailboats. By now we are over 20 boats in the harbor and we’ll probably all be here until next Wednesday when it should calm down. Half of the boats are Canadian 👍🇨🇦
So now here we are Sunday night and it’s been quite the blow over the last 2 days. On Friday night, one our our neighbors decided to change location in the middle of the night for whatever reason. He ended up way too close to us so here we were at 2 o’clock in the morning letting out more chain in the hopes to back away from this guy so our boats wouldn’t collide. So much for anchoring etiquette.
You can see a lot of the boaters on deck at night, flashlight in hand, checking the anchor and surrounding. Today most everyone stayed on board to keep an eye on things. The others who did venture probably got a good soaking.
It seems since our arrival in the Bahamas, we’ve had very few calm days in a row, hence many sleepless nights. And according to most the recent forecast, we should be in for another windy weekend.
We absolutely adore Hatchet Bay for many reasons. The people are beyond friendly and so helpful. We were on our way to do laundry which is about a 10 minutes walk from our dinghy dock. A mini van stopped and said “ you must be going to the wash house, hop in and I’ll give you a ride”. Nice!!!
The other day a truck stopped and we asked if we could have a ride back to the village, he said “ why do you think I stopped? ....” thanks for the ride.😁
Again today, we were talking to boater friends of ours and a young boy came up to us and asked “ may I give you some directions?” Everyone is so friendly it’s mind blowing.
We went with friends for happy hour a few days ago and the bartender came up to our table after having served us and plucked her baby boy on my lap and asked me to watch him while she took her daughter to the washroom.... if this had been Canada, social services would have been called within minutes. He was a cute little bugger😊
We had the opportunity to visit a real cool underground cave a few miles up the road. We arrived at the same time as a group of young tourists. We impressed them by pulling out our flashlights and walking shoes. “Oh you came prepared “ the said to us, then walked into the cave with filpflops and cellphones lol.....next generation
Cheers
