Season 2 begins
After 6 months in New Brunswick, we are back on our boat at Green Cove Spring Marina also referred to as Sketchy Marina to do repairs and maintenance before heading back to the Bahamas.
We enjoyed our time with family and friends, but it was time to return. Hurricane season is over and even though the COVID-19 is still in full force we figured we’d be safer on our boat then anywhere else. Winter is coming; the only white powder we want to see is on the beaches 😎
When we returned to Canada in May we rented a car and drove up north. The car was packed with boat stuff (ie the cockpit table that we wanted to strip and varnish, some heavy canvas to fix and much more ) thinking we’d do this leisurely over the next several months then drive back down. We bought a lot of gear online as well since it was cheaper not having to pay the exchange rate.
Well, the borders are still closed for travel by land but flying is possible. Oh boy, how to bring all the boat parts, clothing and everything that we accumulated without paying a fortune and shipping it as cargo is not an option since 9/11. We managed to obtain from family 4 large suitcases, the biggest allowed before going into oversized. It took us a few weeks of planing, packing and repacking so each suitcase would not exceed 50 lbs. Believe it or not they all registered between 49.3 lbs to 50 lbs. We also had carryons and small backpacks.; Never will we travel with so much baggage 🧳 oh but did find extra space to add 2 bottles of wine from the duty free lol.
Finally arrived at the boat. It needed to be transferred from storage to the working yard. Since the Marina is pretty full, there was only 1 spot available. Directly in front of the office.!!!! A few inches more and we’ll be on their porch. Talk about being on display. So these 50 lb bags all had to be brought up the ladder and into the boat. Plus about 40 bags of groceries and of course beer and wine.
The boat was absolutely filthy inside and out after just 6 months. Still cleaning it.
4 weeks later…
So here we are, still waiting on some parts to come in to finish repairing the sail drive. The bodywork and painting of the hull have been hampered by rain and very cold temperatures. Whenever you think a project will take a few hours, the reality of it means 2 to 4 days or more and other problems are likely to pop up in the mean time. So now we need to repair our generator that won’t start and Mike will need to go up the mast to fix our anchor light. Both were working fine when we hauled out in May.
Hopefully by next weekend we’ll be ready to splash and provision for the next part of our journey.
We are hoping to cross the Gulf Stream before Christmas. Keep the fingers crossed.
More to come on our next blog.😎
Cheers,
Mike and Pierrette
