The Dominican Republic is a blast

We are totally enjoying being in the DR. We’ve been here for a month already and we’ll most likely be here for the next 5 to 6 months. The hurricane season is about to begin which is from early June to the end of November. We’re in the town of Luperon and it’s a hurricane hole for the Island.

There’s quite a few cruisers already here to wait out the season and many more are arriving every week. Some came 10 to 15 years ago and have never left. 😳 We do like it here but not sure we’d want to live on board our boat for such a long time and at the same place. Too many other interesting islands to discover.

The down side of the bay in Luperon is that it’s very dirty so no swimming here and not sure we’d want to eat the fish in this area either lol. Fortunately there is a beach on the ocean side nearby.

We’ll be hauling out as well in the next few months for repairs to our sail drive transmission that was unfortunately not done properly in Florida.

The DR is so laid back and affordable especially after the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. What a refreshing change.

But the DR drivers are NUTS!!!

We’ve meet a great British couple and have rented cars together twice to visit some of the island. Every time you drive you take your life in your hands lol. It’s a wonder that there aren’t more accidents and casualties on this island. You have to have nerves of steel, eyes all around your head  and reflexes that are beyond human not to mention sheer luck just to get to your destination in one piece. By the time you arrive at your hotel with your hair standing up and on fire 🔥😱you’re more than ready for a few pints just to slow down the heart rate lol.

So far we’ve seen guys on motorbikes carrying ladders crossways, holding on to big propane tanks, water jugs, talking on cell phones, whole families, dogs and driving with one hand while the other one is in a cast. Oh and one holding on to a bouquet of flowers for his hopefully sweetheart. ❤️

Even though car rentals are cheap, we’re seriously considering taking the bus ( and sit way in the back) on our next visit to another city.🚌

The DR is surrounded by great mountains, beautiful beaches, colourful landscape, great food, fresh and varied fruits and veggies and so affordable. The people are so friendly, laidback (except for the drivers) and helpful, what more could we ask for!!!! Ah yes, one thing … turn down the volume of the music. They only have one button  for it… HIGH and I think it’s an acquired taste 🙄🤫

Cheers
