Motorcycle tour

We are coming closer to the end of the hurricane season. It’s been pretty tame this year as far as hurricanes are concerned and being in the Luperon harbour, we’ve been very protected. Often the black clouds are rolling in, big flashes of lightning and roaring thunder but nothing ever comes into our little corner of the DR.

We are looking forward to heading out in the next month or so, with a small stop at Ocean World marina to take care of our mechanical issue and then resume our journey. Since many islands are still closed or require costly PCR testing to enter, even if fully vaccinated, we have yet to decide on our next destination. With many countries starting to open up, we are hopeful that the Caribbean islands will do the same.

It has been brutally hot in the last 3 to 4 months with September being the worst. The nights have been cooler in October and looking forward to the cooler temperatures of November and December. For now, the slightest movement has the sweat just pouring down our bodies… not very pleasant 🥵

We rented a motorcycle for a few weeks with our friends from Denmark who have a sailboat close to ours and explored around Luperon and further afield. We took off for 4 days in the mountains and along the coast. The lush green colours of the vegetation were fantastic. Some of the roads that we took would barley qualify as goat trails… hang on it’s a long way down the cliff 😱.

As we got closer to the Haitian border, it became very arid and brown. What a contrast. Also very sad to see the Haitian people trying to make a living at the border crossing of DR. Hard times! Even more so with the Covid.

We then came to the seaside  town of Monte Christi where the mosquitos were big and plentiful. They took quite a chunk of our skin and we emptied a few bottles of mosquito repellent with not much results. Hungry little buggers. 🦟

Not many tourists in that part of the DR, we were basically the only gringos in that region so we were the main attraction as we went past all these small villages. So great to see all the people smiling and waving as we went by.

We also celebrated Mike’s birthday on the tour. What great fun. Especially trying to find the bars that would be able to make  margaritas for us lol. And find them, we did lol🍸

It’s amazing how we’ve adapted to driving in the DR. Having to stop because of big groups of cows in the middle of the road (they definitely have the right of way) or herds of goats, dogs sleeping in the middle of the road or 2 motorcycles, overtaking a car coming towards us is just the way of life here and we don’t blink an eye anymore.

Hopefully we get to do another road trip before we take off. 🏍🚗

Cheers
