Finally heading out

Image
Mother Nature has not been kind to us this month. In northern Florida it has been very cold. Woke up quite a few mornings to 2 degrees. The condensation dripping in your ear or eye ain the early hours of the morning makes for a rude awakening. We know that for most of us Canadians that temperature in December is considered balmy but for us on the water with no heat on the boat it’s brutal🥶 We’ve been at sketchy marina for over 6 weeks. We had originally thought to be here between 2 to 4 weeks but reality is quite different. They say that the worst thing a sailor can have is a schedule. So here we are still in Green Cove Springs !! Up until a few hours ago, it looked like we might have to spend Christmas at sketchy but we finally got a bit of  luck. For the last 2 days, everything seemed to be breaking down and when we thought it was fixed, it would breakdown again. So with a good mechanic, some McGyvering from Mike a few prayers and crossed fingers, it looks like we’ll be ta...

Season 2 begins

Image
After 6 months in New Brunswick, we are back on our boat at Green Cove Spring Marina also referred to as Sketchy Marina  to do repairs and maintenance before heading back to the Bahamas. We enjoyed our time with family and friends, but it was time to return. Hurricane season is over and even though the COVID-19 is still in full force we figured we’d be safer on our boat then anywhere else. Winter is coming; the only white powder we want to see is on the beaches 😎  When we returned to Canada in May we rented a car and drove up north. The car was packed with boat stuff (ie the cockpit table that we wanted to strip and varnish, some heavy canvas to fix and much more ) thinking we’d do this leisurely over the next several months then drive back down. We bought a lot of gear online as well  since it was cheaper not having to pay the exchange rate.  Well, the borders are still closed for travel by land but flying is possible. Oh boy, how to bring all the boat parts, ...

To be continued

We’ve made the painful decision to return to Canada. Since before Easter, the Bahamas has been enforcing  lockdowns every weekend from Friday night  9 o’clock to Monday morning  5 o’clock . They’ve extended this protocol until the end of May. They’ve also added that boaters are no longer allowed to cruise from island to island. Depending on which island you’re in, some will not allow you off the boat at all. If you need groceries, you have to order it online at a minimum of 150.00$ US plus 15.00$ delivery charge. You don’t get to squeeze your own tomatoes or oranges. The horror!! Someone else picks it for you. That’s okay in northern countries but not south where fresh produce are on borrowed time. We could live with the food distribution, but staying on our boat day after day for possibly months to come is not very appealing especially since we see the local people allowed to walk around and go to about their regular agenda but us boaters are confined to our vesse...

Curfew / lockdown Bahamas style

Image
Probably a lot of you think that we’re living the high life in the Bahamas. Not so.... The Prime Minster of the Bahamas has decreed that all boaters may only leave their vessels for food, water, fuel, medical attention and takeout food. Every weekend there is a full lockdown so then we’re not even allowed off the boat for any reason. All grocery stores, shops restaurants are closed during that period. The rules seems to vary from Island to Island. Some won’t ever allow you off the boat so yo we u must order everything online  to be delivered at the dock. You can’t even choose your own tomatoes. We've  been at anchor at Black Pont in the Exumas since March 23rd waiting and hoping things will improve. Easter weekend, we are in lockdown from Thursday night to Tuesday morning. All we can do is eat, swim, nap, drink and Repeat lol Day 1 of lockdown: The weather has been horrible all day, the boat bounced up and down non stop because of westerly winds. Can’t do much. A f...

COVID in the Bahamas

Image
Like so many countries around the world, the virus is also in the Bahamas. As of the 27th of March there are 9 reported cases in the islands which is low compared to so many other countries. The government  has issued a 24 hour curfew to the residents/boaters/visitors. You are permitted to go to grocery stores, get fuel and water and pickup takeout food as well as take a 90 minute walk preferably outside of the main town. There are still many cruisers here especially Canadians. Many Americans are leaving to go back to the States since it’s easier for them and closer. As for us, we are slowly making our way south so when the borders do open we can make a dash for Turks and Caicos. So enough of this cause.you’ve probably heard it all in the media and other information sources We want to give you more photos instead 😊 PS Fed the sharks off the side of our boat with lot’s of stingrays swimming around waiting to catch a little nibbly lol Cheers Mike and Pierrette ...
